SASSA - TORNIMPARTE

Sassa is a Comune of L’Aquila hamlet. It lies 10 km west of Abruzzi chief town. Until 1927 it was an autonomous Comune, than incorportated into the L’Aquila one. Many other hamlets are present in the area, such as Pagaliare di Sassa, Genzano and Colle. In 1882 the railway line from L’Aquila arrived, and a new station was opened at Sassa, named “Sassa-Tornimparte”, serving the Comune of Tornimparte too. Around the station a new settlement, Sassa Scalo, was erected. After being damaged during the Second World War, a new passenger station was rebuilt. There is a running track and a passing loop; the good yard was abandoned many years ago. Passenger flow is quite low, despite all trains call at this station; many residents prefer use direct bus services to L’Aquila, instead using the train until L’Aquila station and then change for a bus to the city centre. Since june 2008 there are no more through services to Sulmona.
